Microsoft will build a data center in Cheyenne

Governor Matt Mead’s efforts to land a Data Center for the state has paid off. Microsoft is going to build a 112 million dollar facility near Cheyenne that could employ up to 40 people.

To attract Microsoft, Governor Mead says the state offered nearly 11 million dollars in incentives, but he believes that the state should get a great return on its investment and he says it will provide high paying jobs.  Mead has been touting the need for Data Centers and he says this is an important start.

“For years and years and years, Wyoming has talked about the need to diversify our economy and that we need to do more in terms of keeping young people in Wyoming.    And one of the ways to keep young people in Wyoming is to give them different options.  The fact is that not everyone wants to get into energy, Ag, tourism or one of our other small businesses.  This provides another avenue and it’s a start.”

Wyoming economic development officials say Microsoft considered three other communities in the state, before choosing Cheyenne.  Work on the facility should begin this summer.
