More WY Children Qualify for Free Lunch

Laramie, WY – The percentage of school children that qualify for free or reduced-price lunch has climbed by one percent each year for the last five years. About 32 percent of families qualified for the federal program this year. That's according to Katie Mordhorst, who manages the food programs for the Wyoming Department of Education. She says the state's economic boom has not reached everyone. The boom is not per-se hitting those families with children in schools. For example, Mordhorst says more families are qualifying for the subsidies in heavily agricultural areas like Big Horn and Washakie counties. The U-S Department of Agriculture has just reported that about one in ten Wyoming households had trouble getting enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle last year. That is approximately the national average.
