National Group Opposes Streamlined Sales Tax Effort

Laramie, Wy – The National Taxpayers Union is opposing Wyoming's effort to streamline its sales tax. Wyoming is one of several states working to simplify its tax code. A major reason to do this is to collect Internet taxes. Estimates are that Wyoming loses tens of millions of dollars a year because it can't collect sales tax from internet purchases.
But, the National Taxpayers Union's Pete Sepp says that Wyoming should consider its entire economy before deciding about its sales tax. He says there could be an initial spike in revenue but then some businesses may decide not to come to Wyoming so the net impact could be negative.
Sepp says it also may be unconstitutional to collect remote sales taxes and if it is he says it will be difficult to implant and get the money to states like Wyoming.
