National Scholastic Press Association Honors Wyoming High Schooler

Vicky Morales

The National Scholastic Press Association has awarded a Wyoming high school student second place for Broadcast News Story of the Year.

Vicky Morales, a junior at Cody High School, won the award for a news story she produced last year on organ donation month.

The three-minute video features Cody High School students explaining what organ donors are and whether or not they would be one, as well as teachers who have been directly impacted by organ donation.

Morales said she wanted to take a timely national topic and localize it to her community.

“I sent out a survey to the school to see if any other teachers or students had been impacted,” said Morales. “And it turns out that quite a few have been. So I wanted to show the community and teach them what organ donation was all about.”

The news story was produced for Cody High School’s semi-monthly, half-hour video broadcast. Morales received the award at the National High School Journalism Convention in Dallas.

Kamila has worked for public radio stations in California, New York, France and Poland. Originally from New York City, she loves exploring new places. Kamila received her master in journalism from Columbia University. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring the surrounding areas with her two pups and husband.
