Laramie, Wyo. – The Department of the Interior has extended the comment period on a proposal to add more regulation for coal mines. The idea is to have the federal government start reviewing the permits for coal mines, which would be on top of a review by a state agency.
The head of the Wyoming Mining Association, Marion Loomis, says the proposal came about to target mines in the east. "They were doing this because of mountain top mining, but the proposal that came out will affect everybody," he said.
Loomis says his group is submitting comments opposing the proposal. He says if it goes through it would increase costs for mines.
