Officials debate wind tax policy

State and industry leaders are discussing
ways to restructure how wind energy is taxed in Wyoming so that the
state's wind tax policies are more attractive to wind producers.
Under current law, wind developers will be taxed $1 per megawatt
hour beginning Jan. 1, 2012. The existing sales tax exemption on
wind energy equipment also is set to expire at that time.
Wind producers fear the changes will dissuade developers from
installing new projects in Wyoming.
The state Legislature's Joint Revenue Interim Committee
instructed legislative staff to prepare a draft bill on the subject
for its next meeting in October.
