Online University Based Near Evanston to Close
Cheyenne, WY – The Wyoming Department of Education says
that an unaccredited online university based in Evanston has agreed to stop doing business in Wyoming.
Under the agreement, Rutherford (ROO'-ther-ford) University is expected to remove all mentions of having a Wyoming license or Wyoming address from its Web site starting tomorrow (Friday).
Rutherford has been in trouble with the state since last year for allegedly NOT proving that its academics were coming from within Wyoming and not elsewhere. The department also accused
Rutherford of NOT disclosing who was teaching its courses.
Last winter, the Legislature passed a law requiring private, postsecondary schools to either have federally recognized accreditation or at least be serious candidates for it.
The law doesn't go into effect until July first. But department officials said that along with Rutherford's problems with the department, the law has prompted the school to move on.
Officials with the school did NOT return a call seeking comment.
