Petition drive against cell phone ban falls short

Cheyenne, Wy – A petition calling for a citywide vote on Cheyenne's new ban on hand-held cell phones while driving has failed to gather enough signatures.
The Cheyenne City Clerk determined that the petition fell about
700 signatures short of the 2,800 needed.
Petition organizers turned in more than 3,500 signatures but
more than 1,000 of those were disqualified because the people who
signed did not live in the city or were not registered voters.
The ban on talking on hand-held cell phones or texting took
effect in September after being approved by the city council.
Talking on handsfree devices is still allowed.
Violators can be fined up to $750.
Rock Springs has a similar cell phone ban.
