Plea Deal Reached In Sheridan Murder
Sheridan, Wy –
The man charged with a brutal murder in the middle of Sheridan a year ago will spend the rest of his life in prison as a part of a plea agreement. Prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty against Stephen Hyatt.
On July 2nd, 2004, witnesses say Hyatt commandeered the vehicle of 18-year-old Kaleigh Ford. When Ford jumped from the moving car, Hyatt gave chase and shot her three times with a shotgun. Hyatt was to face the death penalty, but Sheridan County Attorney Matt Redle says there were conflicting evaluations about whether Hyatt was mentally ill. Redle says that made the plea deal appropriate because he says it was already a borderline death penalty case. Redle thinks the community will be supportive.
