Pokes Face Temple
The wait is just about over for the Wyoming Cowboys. The Pokes will face the Temple Owls in the New Mexico Bowl Saturday and try to overcome one of the best defenses in the country. Wyoming finished third in the Mountain West Conference while Temple placed 2nd in the east division of the Mid-America Conference.
Temple likes to run the ball and features running back Bernard Pierce who scored 25 touchdowns and rushed for over 13-hundred yards. Wyoming Head Coach Dave Christensen says his team has given up some rushing yards this year, but it has done a good job of keeping teams out of the end zone.
“Bottom line is that yards is not really an important stat it’s points. As long as you are playing well and not allowing them to score points you got a chance to win games. And our guys have done a pretty good job of that. We’ve created a lot of takeaways in the red zone that have taken a lot of points off the board. You know the key is to continue to do that.”
Meanwhile, Wyoming Quarterback Brett Smith says the Owls defense is among the best he has seen. He says it will be important not to fall behind.
“You know the offense needs to capitalize on every drive we have. So that I think if we do that and we put the pressure on them I think we will be in better shape as opposed to if we don’t, I think we are going to be in trouble.”
Both teams have records of 8-4 on the season. Kickoff is Saturday at noon.
