Cheyenne, Wyo. – A recent survey says a strong majority of Wyoming residents support uranium mining.
And the survey says the support for the in-situ method of extracting uranium is strongest among those who say they have some knowledge of how it works.
The survey was conducted by the Wyoming Survey & Analysis Center at the University of Wyoming. The survey contacted 935 people last February by telephone.
The survey says Wyoming residents put job creation and tax revenue above environmental and health concerns when it comes to mineral extraction in general.
Wyoming is the nation's leading uranium producer and in-situ mining is the preferred process used to extract it. In-situ involves dissolving minerals underground and pumping uranium-bearing water to the surface. The process raises groundwater contamination concerns from some.
