A University of Wyoming official says it's going to be a struggle for the school's Athletics Department to make 10 percent budget cuts over the next two years. Provost Myron Allen says the University cut the Athletics budget by 1-point-1 million dollars. Allen says he knows some people are questioning why they didn't cut more, but he says that could fundamentally change the character of athletics at U-W.
"Athletics receives some state money and generates revenue on its own that effectively doubles its budget. So if we were to cut athletics further, it would have an impact on those revenues that would be generated and you might anticipate a multiplier effect."
That said, Allen says Athletics was chosen for a fairly sizeable cut because it does not necessarily fill U-W's core mission of putting professors in front of students.
