Laramie, WY – Currently large packing companies do not have to agree upon a sale price with a producer until after the fact. Producers call the system unfair and want it changed. They say it hurts their profits, but packing companies counter by saying the practice keeps prices low for consumers. Senator Mike Enzi has been convinced that the pricing system needs more fairness and he is trying to change it. Independent Cattlemen of Wyoming spokesman Jeff Francis says Enzi's bill and another that would limit cattle ownership of Packers would help the industry.
Francis adds that the bills would make the system fair for consumers and producers.
