Rare Exhibit Opens in Thermopolis
Laramie, WY – More than 300 visitors came to witness a rare species of winged dinosaur at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center in Thermopolis on Thursday.
Scientists estimate the Archaeopteryx fossil is 150 million years old. It's one of only 10 specimens of its kind in the world, and the only one held in North America.
The Center's general manager, John Gibbel, says this small winged dinosaur is scientifically important because it sheds light on the evolution of birds. And it's fossilized in such a way that allows scientists to better understand the species.
Gibbel says the is on indefinite display at the museum.
