Riverton neighborhood didn't have working fire hydrants

Riverton, Wyo. – A Riverton mobile home park where a fire
killed three small children earlier this month didn't have water in its fire hydrants.

State law doesn't require subdivisions to have functioning fire hydrants.

Firefighters say the absence of water in the hydrants made no difference in their response to the fire. They say they arrived at the fire less than 8 minutes after getting the call and brought more than enough water in their trucks to put the flames out quickly.

Even so, State Fire Marshall Lanny Applegate says any fire hydrants that don't have water in them should be removed. He says such hydrants can give people a false sense of security.
