Sage Grouse Listing Could Harm Energy And Grazing

Taos, NM – U-S Interior Secretary Gale Norton says listing the sage grouse as an endangered species could significantly threaten energy production and grazing. Speaking to Western Governors Tuesday, Norton says coal mining, natural gas production, electric transmission corridors and cattle grazing are all in the middle of sagebrush habitat. She says officials must minimize the impacts on sage grouse habitat to help keep the bird from being listed as endangered. The U-S Fish and Wildlife Service is studying whether or not to list sage grouse as a threatened or endangered species.
