Sec. of the Interior Defers Lease of Wyoming Public Lands

Laramie, WY – The new Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, pulled eight leases from an oil and gas sale in Wyoming this week. Salazar says he deferred the lease sales at the request of Governor Dave Freudenthal. Some of the leases are near the Jack Morrow Hills and the others are next the Shoshone National Forest. The governor's Deputy Chief of Staff, Ryan Lance, says they are pleased with the decision. "More so we're pleased with the process they employed. That they reached out to the states and made an affirmative statement that states' interests would hold a lot of sway in these sorts of decisions," Lance says.
The deferred leases only account for five percent of the total lease sale and Lance says that shows oil and gas development will have a robust place in the new administration.
