Senator Thomas: No New Drilling in National Forests

Laramie, WY – U-S Senator Craig Thomas says national forest land in Wyoming should be off-limits to drilling for oil and gas as a general rule.
Thomas said national forests have been set aside as areas with special scenic, recreational and historic qualities. Even though the land has been leased, he said there should not be drilling there.
Thomas, a Republican and Wyoming's senior senator, took a tour yesterday of the Hoback Ranches Subdivision near Bondurant. The federal government has sold energy leases on the land near the subdivision, and also in the nearby Wyoming Range, but has not yet issued permits to drill there.
He said that existing drilling operations in the Wyoming Range should be allowed to continue.
Thomas said he intends to work with Forest Service officials to seek protections for the lands as the agency revises its management plans for the areas.
