Sleeping Giant To Close
Cody, Wy – One of America's oldest ski resorts won't open
this winter due to a drop in skiers, lack of snow and the need for
a new lift.
Keith Dahlem is owner and manager of the Sleeping Giant Ski Area
west of Cody in the Shoshone National Forest.
He says he needs to replace or repair a T-bar lift but needs
500-thousand dollars to get the job done.
He's currently looking for investors.
The ski area was facing a shutdown anyway because of safety
concerns by the U-S Forest Service over the lift.
Dahlem is optimistic that Sleeping Giant will reopen next
winter, and he's hoping to lure back skiing programs at Cody High
School and Northwest Community College.
Several years ago, those programs switched their training site
to Red Lodge, Montana.
Dahlem also blames lack of snow as a factor in not opening this
year, along with fewer recreation visitors in the region because of
stricter snowmobile rules in Yellowstone National Park.
