Snowmobile Numbers Down
Yellowstone National Park – The number of snowmobiles entering Yellowstone
National Park this winter never came close to the new daily limits
for the machines.
John Sacklin is a management assistant at Yellowstone. He says
poor snow conditions and continued confusion over the rules for
snowmobiles likely contributed to the lower turnout.
Sacklin says the average number of snowmobiles parkwide in
January and February was just 239 a day. The peak day, seen in late
February, was about 420 snowmobiles.
That's far below the limit of 720 guided snowmobiles the
National Park Service imposed for this past winter at Yellowstone.
Officials say the figure was meant to provide a measure of
certainty to gateway communities, which have traditionally banked
on winter travelers -- and snowmobilers in particular -- for
