Cheyenne, Wy – Services were held in Cheyenne this
morning (Tuesday) for Private First Class James Joseph Arellano. He was killed by an explosive device earlier this
month while serving in the Army in Iraq.
Soldiers presented Diana Arellano, the soldier's mother, and
Jaime Smith, his widow, with medals and a folded flag at the
cathedral. His posthumous awards were the Bronze Star, the Purple
Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Hundreds of people, including many military personnel in dress
uniforms, crowded the cathedral.
Reverend Gary Ruzicka celebrated the mass. He said there was
great sadness in the hearts of the people in the building, the
community and throughout the nation. He said one of the nation's
best had made the ultimate sacrifice.
Governor Dave Freudenthal said he's heard from people around
Wyoming that they feel a sense of loss at Arellano's death. But he
said people also have a strong sense of admiration for him.
