State and Feds Pledge Millions To Help Low Income Students

Laramie, Wy – The state and federal government are putting 42 million dollars towards a program to prepare low income students for college. It's called GEAR UP and will start in 2006. First Lady Nancy Freudenthal announced the program Tuesday. She says the money is not going to scholarships, but rather to lay the groundwork for success as early as the junior high school years.
Specifically the money will be used to offer 2000 low income students advice on what courses to take, how to apply for grants and loans, plus it will prepare students for taking the A-C-T test.
Freudenthal says she hopes the program can help break the cycle of poverty in Wyoming.
