State Brass Turns to Washington Over Yellowstone
Laramie, WY – Governor Freudenthal says he is disappointed to hear that the National Park Service will close the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park in the winter. The preferred winter use plan will be made official next week. The Governor says the Park service made the decision even though it's own studies show that avalanche concerns can be safely and affordably mitigated. This week the Governor said that the state even offered to help with that mitigation.
Unfortunately, the Park Service fulfilled our worst fear which was that the decision had already been made," the governor said. "I am hopeful that we can continue to work with our delegation and find some sort of relief in Washington.
Congresswoman Barbara Cubin has already said that she will contact the Vice President and President to attempt to get them to use their executive powers to overturn the decision. The closure would be in effect next winter and would run from early November to mid-March
