State Ready to Build Multi-Lane Highways
By Renny Mackay
Laramie, WY – The Wyoming Department of Transportation is ready to start building two multi lane highways, but first needs money. Wyoming Public Radio's Renny MacKay reports a committee met recently and voted to start funding the projects. WyDOT says it could make the highway between Laramie and Colorado a four lane road in 2008, same with the highway south of Casper. But, the department does not have the money to do this, so it needs a source of funding. The legislature considered raising gas taxes, but there was no support for that. Now lawmakers are looking at spending money from taxes on mineral development. Democratic Senator Jayne Mockler says that's not the right thing to do. Mockler was the only person on the committee to vote against this plan. And the governor another Democrat also does not support increasing the gas tax to pay for highways.
