Laramie, WY – A number of public health entities in the state are urging people to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases as part of an awareness campaign this month. An outreach educator for Laramie Reproductive Health says that as many as half of sexually-active young people could contract an S-T-D by the age of 25 without knowing it. Rosie Lew adds that statistics in Laramie shows that testing is very important. "We see a lot of new cases of STD's particularly Chlamydia. A lot of times Chlamydia won't have systems, so people will continue to have unprotected sex and not know they are infected."
Lew says S-T-D numbers have increased across the state, but she attributes that to the fact that more people are getting tested, not to higher rates of transmission.
