Supreme Court Hears Case Of Gillette Man
Cheyene, Wy – The Wyoming Supreme Court today (Tuesday) heard arguments on the first of three pending appeals from a Campbell County man convicted in tangled series of crimes that left two young people dead in 2005.
Kent Alan Proffit Senior is appealing his conviction on murder and conspiracy charges in the death of 19-yer-old Jeremy Forquer. Proffit is serving a sentence of life without parole in the killing.
Proffit also is appealing his life sentence for ordering the murder of 16-year-old Bryce Chavers. Proffit was convicted of molesting the Chavers and sentenced to serve 80 to 120 years in prison.
His lawyer argued that a judge shouldn't have allowed the jury to hear statements from teenagers who were also charged in the Forquer case. In addition, the lawyer argued that the judge should have allowed a defense expert to testify about police procedures.
An attorney for the state told the justices that Proffit got a fair trial.
The Supreme Court will make a written ruling on the case later.
