Laramie, Wy – The Sweetwater County Commission is giving the Sheriff's department more money in hopes of keeping deputies from quitting.
Sheriff Dave Gray says he's lost 14 deputies in less than three years. Some are going to the natural gas fields, but others are using their training to take higher-paying jobs with the Rock Springs and Green River police departments.
A recent survey found that a starting police officer in Rock Springs makes about six-thousand-dollars more each year than a starting deputy in the county.
The commission chairman says he is worried about the fallout of this decision. He says other county employees already are asking if they'll get raises, too.
