Cheyenne, WY – A group of Cheyenne-area educators say they'll spend the summer trying to raise $30,000 to help fund a civic education program that fell victim to federal budget cuts. Students participating in We the People: the Citizens and the
Constitution program study and debate the U.S. Constitution, other
founding documents and many court cases. The nationwide program
lost about $22 million in federal funding after it was placed on a
list of earmarks, which came under scrutiny during budget talks.
U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., was one of 81 members of the
U.S. House of Representatives who protested listing the program as
an earmark. Teachers with the program say they want to continue it because
it challenges and engages students with government and history.
