Cheyenne, Wy – A three-year-old state program that uses
military regimen to help troubled teens is struggling to survive.
Officials say the Wyoming National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program
at Camp Guernsey is in danger of losing federal funding and
possibly even closing because of a lack of enrollment.
The program can accommodate up to 120 teens every 22 weeks. But
just 19 cadets will graduate from the program's fifth class later
Program director Joe Michaels says there's various reasons for
why the program is struggling, including a lack of marketing and
the misperception that it is a boot camp.
Michaels said he's searching for new ways to promote the program
and some steps are being taken to recruit teens.
