Torrington, WY – While Riverton has garnered much of the attention in the competition to land the state's new medium-security prison, Torrington officials believe they are in the driver's seat. Goshen County Economic Development Corporation Director Brad Sutherland points out Torrington had the highest score in the first round of the decision-making process, with Riverton second and Rawlins third. Questions have arisen about whether a prison in Torrington would create jobs and spending that would go across the Nebraska border. Sutherland says his town shouldn't be penalized for being a border community. He believes Torrington's location is actually advantageous since it's close to Cheyenne, Casper and Gillette. Department of Corrections officials will make a formal site recommendation in January.
