U-W hopes new coach will rescue wrestling program

Laramie, Wyo. – The University of Wyoming has hired a new head coach to turn its struggling wrestling program around.

Athletics Director Tom Burman announced that former Oklahoma State University coach Mark Branch will take over as head coach this fall.

Last year, the team finished 4 and 9 under former head coach Steven Suder.

Burman says the athletics department has let the wrestling program slip for too long.

"I believe that wrestling really fits well within our state culture and who we are," Burman says. "And I don't think there is any reason why we cant be a perennial top 20 and every once and a while make a run at being in the top 10. At that point anything can happen on the national scene."

Branch helped coach O-S-U to four N-C-double-A championships between 2002 and 2005.
