Uranium Company Agrees To Large Fine
Douglas, Wy – The company that operates the only uranium in-situ leach mining operation in the state has agreed to pay one point four million dollars because of alleged groundwater violations. The State's Department of Environmental quality accused Power Resources Incorporated of a long list of violations including delaying the restoration of groundwater near its mine in Converse County. The company agreed to pay the state 900-thousand dollars in penalties and another 500-thousand for environmental projects related to uranium mining. The DEQ says, despite the violations that there is no groundwater contamination from the mine. Still, the violations worry some residents in northeast Wyoming where companies are proposing new leach mining operations. They have started a group called Ranchers and Neighbors Protecting Our Water.
