UW observes Holocaust Remembrance Week

In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Week, volunteers at the University of Wyoming’s student union have been taking turns reading the names of victims killed by the Nazis.

After several years of hiatus, several student groups revived the once-annual week of ceremonial and educational activities remembering and honoring the 11 million Europeans killed in the 1940s.

U-W graduate Sarah Robinson volunteers with Hillel, the Jewish student group, which helped organize this week’s events.

“Yes, it’s been 65 years since the Holocaust… but it’s not that long ago. So by bringing this to their attention on a yearly basis, we remind students and remind community what can happen when hatred and distrust and racism are allowed to run rampant.”

Robinson says student groups will host movie screenings, a choral concert of traditional Jewish songs and a panel discussion about the broad demographics of holocaust victims, including homosexuals and people with disabilities. On Thursday, Polish holocaust survivor Estelle Nadel (nah-DEL) will speak about her experiences. More information is available at U-W-Y-O-dot-E-D-U.
