UW to Use Federal Grant for Suicide Prevention
Laramie, WY – The University of Wyoming has begun to
expand and improve its suicide prevention programs thanks to a 225-thousand dollar federal grant.
U-W is among 34 universities this year to receive grant money for its program.
David Cozzens of the U-W Counseling Center and interim dean of students says Wyoming ranks first in the nation in suicides.
The U-W program will use the money to seek to identify at-risk individuals and reduce the stigma of seeking mental health resources.
Cozzens says the average person needs to educate themselves as to the signs and symptoms of someone who may be suicidal.
And he says people are generally afraid or uncomfortable with intervening when someone may be suicidal.
