Verizon considers mega data center in Laramie

Cheyenne, Wyo. – A state economic development official says news that Verizon is interested in locating a multibillion dollar computer center in Laramie puts Wyoming on the digital map.

Robert Jensen, of the Wyoming Business Council, says it elevates the state as far as other companies that may be looking to build such data centers.

Verizon has acquired a two-year option on 160 acres about a mile north of Laramie for possibly locating a data center that would house expensive computer hardware.

The company has not made a final decision on building the center in Laramie.

Company spokeswoman Lynn Staggs says the proposed center would cost about $4 billion over a 10-year period to build and maintain.

It could employ up to 200 workers to monitor and maintain the equipment.
