Wheatland Resident Charged In Punter Attack

Greeley, Colorado – Northern Colorado's backup punter is
suspended from the team and from school after his arrest on
suspicion of stabbing starting punter Rafael Mendoza.
Sophomore Mitch Cozad of Wheatland, Wyoming, was arrested
yesterday on a charge of second-degree assault. He is free on a
30-thousand-dollar bond.
Evans police Lieutenant Gary Kessler says the motive may have
been competition for the first-string job.
Kessler says Mendoza was attacked from behind and stabbed in his
kicking leg after parking his car outside his apartment Monday
night. Witnesses helped lead to Cozad.
Coach Scott Downing says Mendoza is out of the hospital but will
miss Saturday's game at Texas State University.
