Wildfire continues to grow as of Tuesday afternoon
Newcastle, WY – A wildfire in northeast Wyoming has grown to nearly 7-square-miles today, and at least two new fires just south have cropped up as well.
Officials suspect that the multiple fires were caused by lightning strikes, and so far, the largest of the three - the Whoopup Fire - has caused the evacuation of 16 homes, and destroyed horse and utility trailers as well as a barn.
The fire was reported early Monday morning and several hundred firefighters are on the scene, as well as a federal fire management team which will lead local firefighting efforts.
Officials say they are working to put the fires out as quickly as possible but are concerned by high temperatures and winds which exacerbate conditions. As of this evening, the fires continue to rage out of control.
