Work By Jackson, Laramie Artists To Be Added To State's Public Buildings

Some of Wyoming’s best artists will be recognized this week at the 2016 Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition and Sale. Four works receiving the Purchase Awards join a growing collection of art in the state’s public buildings. This year’s Purchase Awards go to Jackson artists Martin Hagen and Valerie Seaberg and Laramie artists Dan Hayward and Joy Keown. A painting by Cheyenne’s Rachel Ondrak received the Governor’s Choice Award.

Wyoming State Museum Education Curator Nathan Doerr says the entire juried exhibition features the works of 36 Wyoming artists. “We have 45 pieces that were ultimately chosen by this year’s juror, and they range from oils and acrylics to sculpture pieces to photographs and compressed fabric.”

Door says the exhibition draws together many groups of people to create an interactive event. “It’s fun for us here at the museum to go through the process and install the show,” he says. “It’s great fun for the elected officials to come over and vote for their top pieces. It’s exciting for the public to come to the reception, and there is a People’s Choice award that will be awarded.”

Governor Matt Mead will announce the Purchase, People's Choice, and Bobby Hathaway Juror's Choice awards at the at the Capitol Art Exhibition opening reception Thursday, February 11 from 5-7 p.m. at the Wyoming State Museum. The exhibition is on display until March 5.
