WY Losing Millions to Out-of-State Films
Laramie, WY – You may have noticed that Wyoming has lost the opportunity to have several films set in Wyoming to be filmed in Wyoming. Canada's cheaper production costs lured Brokeback Mountain film crews most recently. Shooting on location in Wyoming can channel millions of dollars into local economies. But the state isn't offering enough of an incentive to attract film companies. Wyoming Film, arts, and entertainment office head Michelle Howard says it's time for the state to decide whether it wants to compete for this big business.
Their idea is to offer a 12 to 15 percent rebate on whatever a film company spends in Wyoming--from catering to extras to equipment. But the plan needs the support of the legislature, which Howard says they'll seek in February.
