Wyoming AARP speaks out against cuts to federal entitlement programs

Laramie, Wyo. – The Wyoming Chapter of the AARP is urging Wyoming's U.S. Senators to oppose cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. Plans for reducing the federal deficit include cuts to those programs.

Cathy Gonzales is the Volunteer President for Wyoming's AARP. She told Senators John Barrasso and Mike Enzi that cuts to Medicare and Medicaid would be very difficult for older people in Wyoming to bear. "Especially with home based community services, that's one of the areas that would be drastically affected by a cut in Medicaid," she said.

As for Social Security, Gonzales says 90% of recipients in Wyoming rely heavily on those checks, month-to-month.

She says the Senators stressed that the federal debt must be cut, but were otherwise noncommittal.
