Wyoming coal hits east coast
Laramie, WY – Utility companies on the East Coast are test-burning coal from Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Mark Davis says the railroad company is shipping Wyoming coal to areas farther east. That would extend the reach of Powder River Basin coal, which Davis says goes primarily to the Mid West and Southern parts of the United States.
"There's a potential of expanding even further the outreach of PRB coal to other parts of the country," Davis says.
A spokesman for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad says the company is in continuous discussions with eastern utilities that are interested in Wyoming's low-sulfur coal. He says they are determining if the coal will burn in eastern boilers.
