Wyoming Disappointed In Interior Ruling
Cheyenne, Wy – Interior Secretary Gale Norton will not cut back on Colorado River Water releases from Lake Powell this year. Wyoming officials are disappointed, because the state still
is dealing with possible long term impacts of the drought.
Wyoming deputy state engineer Harry LaBonde says they wanted the Secretary to allow them to save water into the future. LaBonde says it's important to Wyoming that Lake Powell have more water because if that lake were to drain empty, then Wyoming would be forced to cut back the amount of water it can draw from the Green River. He says that is a real fear, since Wyoming is not doing as well as other states with moisture.
Mike Besson of the Wyoming Water Development Office says his concern is that future storage plans for Wyoming could get scuttled.
