Cheyenne, WY – Transportation officials say the number of traffic fatalities in Wyoming increased slightly last year, but over the long term, road deaths in the state are trending downward.
Wyoming Department of Transportation statistics show there were 159 traffic fatalities in 2008, up 10 fatalities from 2007 but still lower than the 195 fatalities in 2006.
The 2008 count was down almost 10 percent from 2002.
A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study released Monday says roadway fatalities decreased about 8 percent in the western United States in 2008.
The study estimates road fatalities across the country declined 9 percent in 2008 to about 37,300 deaths - the lowest number in nearly 50 years.
