Wyoming Will Soon Track Medical Errors
Laramie, Wy – The Institute of Medicine estimates that over half a million Americans die each year because of medical errors. However, there is no estimate for the number of deaths that occur in Wyoming because right now the state does not keep track of this information, but as of July first it will. Senator Mike Massie helped create a law to compile this data. He says the system that will go into effect is similar to those in several other states. Massie says most of those have not been in effect for very long, but in Minnesota after only one year the state made some changes to their medical system that makes it safer. He hopes that will happen in Wyoming too.
The senator from Laramie says it could be difficult to determine what a medical error is but he says a panel of experts from the health care field will review the cases. All of the information on errors will be kept confidential.
