Zoning Gets Attention at Governor's Conference on Growth
By Peter O'Dowd
Casper, WY – Mayors, county commissioners, state legislators and just about everyone in between returned to Casper College for day two of the governor's conference on growth.
It was a mix of the philosophical the importance of drawing everyday citizens into discussions on the state's future. And the practical how regulations, government spending and impact fees can guide growth management.
In one panel discussion, State Senator Stan Cooper stressed the importance of better zoning, a practice that an independent state like Wyoming has long resisted.
"We need to do this. We need to plan for the worst because if we don't the worst is going to plan for us," Cooper said.
Governor Freudenthal told the 500 plus participants to go back and extend this discussion with elected officials and the public. His final message: Wyoming must plan ahead now, far beyond his or any other administration.
