Behind The Scenes

Behind The Scenes shares with listeners the process of  day to day life in news, travels, and other on-goings of Wyoming Public Media's staff and reporters. Behind The Scenes will showcase a variety of events including what goes into creating an Open Spaces story, traveling across Wyoming for a music festival, and even the start and finish of our member supported fund-drives.

Congratulations to our HD Radio winner, Marsha Knight, Professor of Theatre & Dance at the University of Wyoming. She took a break from this summer’s Snowy Range Dance Festival to pick up her new HD Radio she won in the year-end membership drive drawing.

The 9th Annual Big Horn Mountain Festival was held July 12, 13, and 14, at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Buffalo Wyoming. Wyoming Public Media's Morning Music hosts Grady Kirkpatrick and Paul Montoya traveled to the festival and enjoyed the summer sun and the many bands that played. Here are a few pictures from their weekend at the Big Horn Mountain Festival.

Take a look at the many on-goings during StoryCorps Opening Day in Cheyenne on July 12. Everyone at Wyoming Public Media had a role to play in the StoryCorps launch and the event went off without a hitch. From the press that were invited, to the live interviews and the conversations held, there was never a dull moment.

WPM’s Shades of Ireland tour landed in Dublin on June 10th following an overnight flight from Denver. Our group included twelve Wyomingites, yours truly and my wife Cheryl, Rick Dowe, Jim and Carol Jacobs, Ron and Brenda Delaney all from Laramie, Rick and Sue Chambers from Cheyenne, Sue Ann Robertson from Casper along with her sister Grace Robertson from Wilson and Glen Mooney from Sheridan.

The idea for this story came about when I was reporting on efforts to develop a contraceptive for male coyotes. One of scientists I interviewed, a professor of zoology and physiology at the University of Wyoming, mentioned that wildlife managers in many game reserves in South Africa are using birth control to manage burgeoning elephant populations.

Wyoming Public Media captured the oral history of Wyoming’s families, farms and ranches during the 2012 Wyoming State Fair. WPM set up a booth giving away fans for the hot summer day and did a live broadcast with Grady Kirkpatrick’s Morning Music featuring an acoustic performance from Wyoming’s Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band.  WPM recorded Wyoming Oral Histories of fairgoers that stopped by to chat. Enjoy a few of these engaging stories on the link below…
