University of Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen is on his way to the Manning Passing Academy, a football camp focused on passing and catching skills put on by Archie, Cooper, Eli, and Peyton Manning.

Allen will serve as a camp counselor for younger players, and will also meet with other college players and coaches, and receive some technical training.

UW Sports Information Director Tim Harkins said only a small group of college players are invited to attend.

The Wyoming Cowboys football team preparing for its first bowl appearance in five years when it faces an old foe in Brigham Young in the Poinsettia Bowl. The two teams have not played each other since 2010 when BYU decided to leave the Mountain West Conference. Over the years BYU has dominated the rivalry and if the Cowboys win it will be the first victory over the Cougars since 2003.

The Wyoming Cowboys will play for their first conference title in 23 years Saturday when the Pokes host San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference Championship football game. Wyoming beat San Diego State two weeks ago 34 to 33. Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl said he expects another battle.

Beginning next fall, the University of Wyoming will have beer and wine available for purchase at its football and basketball games. UW’s Board of Trustees approved the plan on Thursday.

Wyoming Athletics Department spokesman Bill Sparks said drinks will cost between six and eight dollars each, and sales are estimated to make at least $290,000. Most of the funds will be used to offset the Athletic Department’s one million dollar budget cut, while some will be given to the university’s alcohol awareness program and a designated driver program.

Many programs on the University of Wyoming campus are facing budget cuts, but there are those who believe that academics is suffering more than it should.

That’s especially when compared to athletics. In public forums several faculty and staff members say they want athletics de-emphasized at the University. The reason is because they think it costs a lot and is not priority.

It’s safe to say that 2015 was a terrible year for the University of Wyoming football team. A slew of key injuries, coupled with inexperience on the defensive end, saw the Cowboys finish with a horrific 2 win and 10 loss record. The good news is that Wyoming returns 18 starters from last year’s team and the hope is that they will be much improved.

It’s been a bad year for concussions for the University of Wyoming football team. While the team does not release exact numbers due to federal health care regulations, media counts put the number above 20. And everyone involved with Cowboy football admits that’s a lot. Head Football Coach Craig Bohl said the high number is surprising.

The news that African American football players at the University of Missouri threatened not to play a football game against Brigham Young reminded some Wyoming players of the time they got kicked off of their team prior to a game with BYU. In Wyoming lore, they are known as the Black 14.

When the Western Thunder Marching Band takes the field at War Memorial Stadium these days, it really takes the field. With 235 members, all 100 yards are practically filled with people in uniforms. It is the biggest band Wyoming has ever seen, it has a new director, and unlike other schools where you have to audition to be a part of the band UW accepts everyone, even those who have never marched in a band before.

For the most part, 2014 was a tough year for the University of Wyoming football team. The Cowboys finished with only four wins and eight losses. But the while the team enters this season with a few question marks, how will its new quarterback fair? Will a revamped defense and offensive line be able to make the necessary improvements? Will the kicking game be better? But one area they feel pretty good about is the fact that they have two amazing running backs in senior Shaun Wick and sophomore Brian Hill. Wick agrees with those who say they are a lot alike.

When the Wyoming Cowboys football team plays Saturday, the Pokes will have a new starting quarterback. While Colby Kirkegaard has played in several games…it will be a new experience for him to be start the season as the number one quarterback.

Coaches say that Kirkegaard has played with a lot of poise during fall camp and they hope that continues. While he is excited about being the starter, Kirkegaard says he doesn’t feel any pressure, because it will be a team effort.
