The University of Wyoming Athletics Department says that ten million dollars in private donations has been raised as it moves forward with the 30 million dollar Arena Auditorium renovation project. 

The redesign and remodel of the facility will include a new a statute to honor Wyoming basketball legend Kenny Sailors and the court will be named after Cheyenne businessman Maury Brown.  U-W Athletics Director Tom Burman says Brown’s contribution allowed the project to go forward.                     

A new report suggests that University of Wyoming Athletics can excel with a few big changes.

UW President Bob Sternberg wants to improve UW athletics, and his office funded the $35,000 College Sports Associates study. 

Former University of Wyoming basketball player Luke Martinez has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery and is serving a sentence of 45 days in the Albany County Jail. 

 

 

The National Association of Basketball Coaches has named The University of Wyoming’s Leonard Washington to the All-District 17 Second Team.

This is the second year in a row that Washington was named to the squad.  The senior helped lead the Pokes to a 20-14 record and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational. He averaged of 12 and a half points and just over eight rebounds a game.  Washington’s 12 double-doubles ranked second in the Mountain West during the regular season.

NABC member coaches vote on the award and honored 242 student athletes this year.

The season is over for the Wyoming Cowboys basketball team.  Western Michigan defeated Wyoming 75-67 in the College Basketball Invitational. 

The Cowboys had a chance to ice the game, but Wyoming’s Josh Adams made only one of two free throws, allowing the Broncos’ David Brown to tie the game with a three-point shot in the closing seconds and send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Broncos pulled away.

After the game, Wyoming Sophomore Larry Nance Junior gave Brown credit for making a tough shot.

Wyoming’s Nathan Sobey made a three-point shot at the buzzer as the Cowboys rallied to beat Lehigh 67-66 in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational. 

Wyoming trailed most of the second half, but rallied to tie it, only to see Lehigh take the lead with six seconds left, setting up Sobey’s game winning shot.

Former Cowboys Basketball Star and purported creator of the jump shot will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Missouri this fall. At age 91, Sailors is the second Cowboy to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Wyoming Public Radio’s Rebecca Martinez spoke with him this week. He says a lot has changed since his days on the court.

    Wyoming guard JayDee Luster scored a career high 18 points to lift  the Cowboys to a 58-48 win over U-C Irvine.  Luster normally distributes the ball, but the Anteaters played a defense that dared him to shoot.

“Coach Shyatt prepared us for that before the game.  He told me about a week ago that guys are going to start playing off of you to try and slow down our offense.  But you know I’ve been coming into the gym every night shooting 300 three’s…so I had that confidence at the end of the game to keep shooting.”
