A new album by Jackson Hole jazz singer Nicole Madison jazzes up a '60s pop song and gives it a place among classic jazz standards. The album’s name—‘In My Life’—comes from a song written by the Beatles. Wyoming Public Radio’s Micah Schweizer reached Nicole Madison at home.

First Annual UW Jazz Fest Draws Student Groups From Around The State

The University of Wyoming is hosting its first annual jazz festival Thursday, March 27 and Friday, March 28. Both days are filled with concerts by high school and middle school jazz groups from around Wyoming. Guest artists from around the country will provide feedback to the performers and conduct clinics with the groups. UW professor and festival organizer Scott Turpen says first and foremost, the festival is about education.

UW Symphony Collaborates With Visiting Artists

On Thursday, March 6, the University of Wyoming Symphony is collaborating with two guest artists: jazz harmonica virtuoso Gregoire Maret and visiting conductor Tonu Kalam. Kalam has directed professional orchestras around the world, and for more than two decades, he’s directed the University of North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. Wyoming Public Radio’s Micah Schweizer asked Kalam what he most enjoys about conducting student orchestras.

Ben Markley is a composer and jazz pianist. He is also a visiting Assistant Professor of Music for the University of Wyoming Music Department. Scott Turpen is a saxophonist and Professor at the University of Wyoming Music Department, teaching Jazz Studies. "And The Wind Came" was written and composed by Ben Markley.

Marian McPartland remembrance, piano jazz special on Wyoming Public Media

Jazz legend Marian McPartland, who hosted the eponymous Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz on NPR for three decades, died peacefully Tuesday night at her home on Long Island, NY. She was 95.

Yellowstone Jazz Festival turns 25

The Yellowstone Jazz Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary next week in Cody. In 1988, a group of jazz enthusiasts in Cody created the festival.  Since then, it has grown in size and stature. This year, returning artists include the Yellowstone Big Band and Sunny Wilkinson.

Yellowstone Jazz Festival - Cody

The Yellowstone Jazz Festival will be celebrating 25 years of presenting live jazz to audiences this July. The Alex Nauman Jazz Trio will start the event with a free performance from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Cody City Park. The “Jazz on the Lawn” outdoor jazz event will be held the next day at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center outdoor stage in Cody with a different set of music featured every 45 minutes from 5:00 to 10:00 PM. Audience members will be able to hear everything from big band jazz to contemporary smooth jazz or to hear a great jazz vocalist.
