John Barrasso Official Portrait 112th Congress

Wyoming Senator John Barrasso has been a leading voice calling on Congress to lift a decades-old ban on exporting U.S. natural gas overseas. It really heated up last year when Russia invaded the Ukrainian peninsula Crimea. Senator Barrasso remembers it well.

“There were a bi-partisan group of us actually in Ukraine the day that the Russian helicopters landed at the gas plant just North of the Crimea, which tells you what it was all about. It was about the gas. And Putin uses energy to hold European countries and Ukraine hostage.”

A report says that Wyoming is well positioned to be a leader in the liquefied natural gas industry or LNG for what are called high horsepower industries.

The US Senate began its vetting of Obama’s pick for a new Energy Secretary Tuesday. And so far, Wyoming lawmakers on the other side of the aisle seem pleased.

Moniz is a physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former energy undersecretary for President Clinton. He would be replacing former secretary Steven Chu, who was thought to favor renewable energy.
